What to check on a workplace visitPre-duty checks, waiting for cargo, shift patterns and license support
What a job ad won’t tell you, listed job by job, with regulations and statistics as the guide
A job ad leaves a lot unsaid. Are on-duty hours under the Improvement Standards actually kept? How much waiting for cargo and loading by hand is there? Who pays for your license, and do you have to pay it back if you leave? Job by job, we list what to check on a workplace visit or trial shift, with regulations and statistics as the guide.
1First, what applies to every job
In driving jobs, overtime and commission make up a large part of pay. To compare offers, ask what assumptions lie behind a job ad’s “¥___ a month or more,” broken down into base pay and allowances, overtime, commission and bonuses. If there is fixed overtime pay, check how many hours it covers, how much it is, and whether hours beyond that are paid.
What happens after you join matters too. Under a government notification, carriers must give newly hired drivers new-driver training. How many days does it take, and who rides along to teach you? If the company supports getting a license, confirm in writing before you join who pays, any minimum period of employment, and whether you would have to pay it back if you leave.
- Pay breakdownAsk separately about base pay, commission, overtime, any fixed overtime pay, and bonuses. For large-truck drivers, about ¥80,000 of monthly pay is overtime and similar (Basic Survey on Wage Structure)
- New-driver trainingThe schedule and length of classroom training and ride-alongs after you join. The legal minimum is 15+ hours classroom + 20+ hours practical for trucks, and 6+ hours for taxis and route buses
- License supportWhether the company pays for your license, any minimum period of employment, whether you must pay it back if you leave early, and support for special eligibility training (age 19, 1 year of experience)
- CertificationsWhether the company holds Good Workplace Certification (働きやすい職場認証制度) or a G-Mark (safety excellence certification). These are also requirements for hiring Specified Skilled Workers
2What to look for, job by job
For trucks, the first question is whether runs keep within the on-duty hours and rest periods set by the Improvement Standards. Ask to see how pre-duty check records, driving logs and digital tachographs are managed; it tells you a lot about the company’s attitude. Drivers must record any wait of 30 minutes or more caused by the shipper in their trip records, which gives you a way to ask how much waiting really goes on.
For taxis, life looks very different on day shifts versus alternate-day shifts. For buses, check for split shifts and the start times of early and late shifts; for warehouses, how forklift qualifications are handled and who pays for training.
Trucks
- On-duty hours and restDo trips allow within 13 hours a day (max. 15) and at least 9 consecutive hours of rest? How are pre-duty check (点呼) records, driving logs and digital tachographs managed?
- Waiting and loadingHow many hours do you wait per trip? Who does hand loading and unloading and other extra tasks, and are they paid for?
- Types of runsThe mix of local, mid-distance and long-haul runs, and how many involve overnight stays
Taxis
- Shift patternDay shifts or alternate-day shifts? Monthly on-duty hours (within 288 for day shifts, 262 for alternate-day) and how ake rest days are taken
- Pay systemThe split between fixed pay and commission, whether there is a so-called minimum-sales threshold (足切り), and bonuses
- How you find faresThe share of app dispatch and the service area. Does the company run ridesharing?
- Working conditionsFacilities for women, short-hour shifts, and the retirement and re-employment ages
Buses
- Shift structureWhether there are split shifts, start times for early and late shifts, and daily on-duty hours (within 13, max. 15)
- Trainee periodHow long it takes to learn the routes, and how long you ride with an instructor
- Route plansAny planned cuts, closures or reorganization. These are sometimes published in the local government’s regional public transport plan
- FacilitiesBreak rooms and toilets for women, uniforms
Warehouses
- Forklift qualificationAre the forklifts 1 ton and over, or under? Will the company send beginners to skills training (31–35 hours), and who pays?
- SafetyDo the forklifts carry the sticker for the annual specified voluntary inspection? How heavy are loads lifted by hand, and how hot does it get inside in summer?
- ShiftsEarly-morning, night and weekend work, and overtime at year-end and during sales
- PromotionTrack record and conditions for promoting part-timers to regular employees
Maintenance
- Type of garageIndependent, part of another business, or a dealer? The mix of shaken inspections, general repair, body work and electric vehicles
- Qualification supportSupport for moving from grade 3 to grade 2 (course fees, exam fees, pass bonuses)
- Readiness for electrificationEquipment for OBD inspection, and whether the garage sends staff to special training for high-voltage work

3What you can and can’t do on a trial shift
A visit is only for seeing the workplace, but if you do work under the company’s direction on a trial shift, you may be treated as a “worker” for that day (Labour Standards Act Study Group report, 1985). Trial shifts on Cura are paid.
Driving jobs, however, have things you can’t do even on a trial shift. Without a Class 2 license and driver registration, you cannot drive a taxi or bus in commercial service. Newly hired truck drivers also need new-driver training and an aptitude assessment, so driving a commercial truck alone on a trial day is hard to imagine. You cannot operate a forklift unless you have completed the course.
Trial shifts for driving jobs are therefore likely to center on riding along in the passenger seat, visiting the office or depot, yard work and watching loading. What you can do differs by company, so check the details before you apply. At a maintenance garage, work such as assisting mechanics, washing vehicles and changing tires needs no qualification, so a trial shift can come close to the real job.
